Landscape from the World of the Armless Maiden
Envisage her after everything that had happened: the girl didn't shed a tear. Moments passed in stillness and she opened her eyes hoping for the darkness to dissolve.
The girl heard the past living it's final moments in the darkness while the future had not yet begun. Fear ceased as she stood still letting leaves slowly fall on her hair. She did not remember her father, the axe nor the pain. Images of the golden pears in the royal garden had fainted, as well as memories of her king and the pearl-decorated veil. The war, the refugee, the false death of her child -- she didn't recall any of it. The girl heard the seven-year-long journey rushing towards her. The story had not ended. _________________________________________ The Armless Maiden is based on an ancient indo-european tale about the eternal battle between good and evil. Composer Tellu Turkka, director-choreographer Päivi Järvinen and Philomela Choir conducted by Marjukka Riihimäki have turned the story into a performance that dances on the border between choir piece and theartre, lightness of the sweetest fairytale and darkness of the deepest nightmare. In The Armless Maiden the human voice, movement, shadows, lights and space form a multidimensional audiovisual work that doesn't need words in order to reach its audience. The working method for the piece is based on improvisation, which can be experienced in the musical and visual world of The Armless Maiden. The process-like working method and the resulting aliveness of the piece are something quite unique for this choir performance. | NewsSee The Armless Maiden
